San Antonio Vacation, part 1

We headed to San Antonio last Wednesday for a few days of fun. We weren't sure how a 6 hour drive with a 2 year old who is now potty trained was going to go so we were all sorts of ready. We bought a travel potty, brought a lot of little presents wrapped, brought a portable dvd player (borrowed, but ended up not working), and lots of snacks. We headed out not too early hoping to miss some of the traffic in Dallas. We weren't in a hurry, we didn't have any plans for that night. After picking up Grammy, we were off. (Cosmo stayed with the Morrow's and had a sleep over with Bridget and Gigi.) We ended up still hitting some traffic in Dallas and one exit before we got onto 35 to San Antonio, which is also right in uptown, (also did I mention it is in the middle of the city where there is no open space and no where that will let you in just to use the bathroom and no place to park) and Jake decides this is the perfect place to let us know he needed to go potty. So once we find get off the highway, sit in traffic to get off because of construction right there, and find a parking lot, that we weren't supposed to park in, to park in, we pulled the travel potty out and tried to find get it in a spot that was somewhat not showing our child's entire private parts to the highway or uptown, he decided nope he doesn't really have to go.

So back in the car we go, hoping that this doesn't start a pattern of just saying he has to go potty to get us to stop! We made it about 1.5 before we tried the dvd player and it didn't work. So after a quick stop at Target (that looked like it was just a few blocks from the highway on the map but was actually a good 5 miles off the highway) we had a new dvd player, that worked and got a movie started for Jake. A quick stop for lunch and a quick potty break and we were back on the road. We made great time considering the couple of unexpected stops in there!

Jake typically has a rough time settling down and going to sleep anywhere but his bedroom, and unfortunately this trip was no different. About an hour of scream and fighting and back and forth trying to decide where he wanted to sleep and he finally went to sleep.

Thursday was Seaworld day! We have been talking about it and watching the Shamu cam online for a couple of weeks so Jake was so excited! I'm not sure who had more fun, Jake getting to see everything or us watching him react and have a blast! He got to feed the dolphins, get his picture with Shamu, ride a few rides (he was too short for a couple, but we are pretty sure he would absolutely love a roller coaster), get splashed and soaked by Shamu, play in the giant play area and splash pad, eat ice cream, and meet the Sesame Street characters.

Parties

We attended two parties last weekend. Jake is now a birthday party pro and knows a birthday party means CAKE and that we sing Happy Birthday. He gets so excited! The first party was at a fun little gym place. Jake had a blast and we had to drag him out of the play area for cake.

The next day we headed to the Morrow's for the annual Pirate Party for Uncle Tom's birthday. We spent the afternoon swimming and playing in their backyard. It was a fun weekend but it made me glad both Josh and I had the next day off, we were exhausted!

Little Fish

We are raising a fish apparently! We have been spending a lot of time at the pool since it opened on May 1st. We try to make it everyday, but we have had a few days we haven't gone. He loves it though and once we get down to the pool we can't get him out. The first time I took him he didn't want to let go of me and I was worried that he forgot how to swim and was scared of the water. But by the next time he was willing to swim from me to the step and the next time he was jumping from the step and swimming to me. Now he is all over the pool. He swim about half the width of the pool well. So we are going to work on taking a breath so he can keep going! We bought him a noodle this year and he can get around the pool no problem with that, so I know he just needs to be able to get up for a breath so swim further.

With as much as he is swimming I fully expect him to make the Olympic team this summer!

He loves being thrown...but a 30lb squirmy kid is hard to catch and he does lots of cannonballs when we do this

Teacher of the Year

Last Thursday was the Teacher of the Year gala. Josh was nominated for teacher of the year for his campus this year. He had to write an essay and was interviewed by a panel during this semester. He apparently made a great impression on the panel because one of the contacted his principal to ask her questions about him. (I guess they thought he wasn't serious about his brief wrestling "career" and wondered if he had any tatoos.) Unfortunately, Josh didn't win (boo!) but 2 men did win, which apparently hasn't ever happened before. But it was a fun night. Grammy hung out with Jake for the evening and he was very sad the next morning when she was not still here when he woke up.

Movie Star in the Making

Jake made his movie debut today. A few weeks ago he did a little screen test at the local library to be in on of their signing films and we got an email saying he was chosen to be in one of the videos a few days later. So the filming date finally came today. We started out a little rough, but once we got outside and started taping he did great. They grouped the kids into two groups, mising up the ages. We think Jake was the youngest one there, so they told us we could be in the film and stand with him, but we just partnered him up with one of the older girls and he just held her hand and followed her around most of the time. It was so cute. The video won't be ready until the end of August, but when it is I will share it.

Flying Very High in the Sky

Josh has always thrown Jake up in the air. He has always loved it. But recently he has decided that he loves it and must do it, over and over and over. And of course because he tells what to do he know tells us, well mostly Josh, that he wants to fly very high in the sky. Unfortunately for Josh, once he starts flying he has no desire to stop. So he gets a good workout anytime Jake asks. It is amazingly cute how much he enjoys it though!

Sick Baby

As I said in the last post, we have a mildly sick baby on our hands. So far we have been lucky in that none of his illnesses have been anything that we needed to see the doctor for. But on Friday Jake started to have some drainage from his eyes. After nap time though he woke up with one of his eyes all goopy. Intially I thought pink eye, but his eye wasn't pink so we decided to wait until Saturday and see how he was. He did not sleep well Saturday night and got less than 9 hours of sleep (instead of his normal 10.5-11.5). So we called the doctor's office first thing Saturday morning and got in for the first appointment of the morning. Unfortunately the doctor that we saw was the doctor that we switched from when Jake was 2 months old because she was so alarmist about everything. But she said that it didn't look like pink eye, but a sinus infection that has his sinuses so clogged up that he has stuff coming out of his eyes.

Poor dude. Fortunately, he isn't really feeling too bad most of the time. But he is on an antibiotic and eye drops. He takes the meds fine, but we had to do some fancy talking and decided that his eye drops are now Magic Mickey Drops. He tolerates them much better knowing that. Hopefully he will be all better in the next few days and we can get over this first real illness and avoid another one anytime soon!

And for some more excited things, pictures! These are random pictures from the past month or so.
