1 Year Old

Jake's party was great! We had a house full of people and had a blast. Jake was worn out! Pam came over early to help us get ready since my mom is one armed right now and she was such a great help through out the party! We hired someone to take pictures so that we could enjoy the party and still get pictures (and I am really thankful we did this because I took exactly zero pictures!). She said she would have them done hopefully by Tuesday and get them in the mail. So when she gets those done I will share some.

So we have a one year old. Wow!

New stuff in the last month:
  • Clapping! He claps all the time...after he does something he claps and waits for you to say yay!
  • When we ask him "How big is Jake?" he puts his arms over his head and we say "So big!" Grams has been working on this since he was born so it is fun that he does it consistently now
  • He walks occasionally, but moves faster crawling so he will take a few steps, squat down and crawl the rest of the way
  • TALKING....all the time! He says more, please, yay, books, dog, dada, mama, byebye, and then all sorts of other jabbering that we don't understand
  • LOVES to read. He will says books and sign please so we will read to him. And he likes to read the same books over and over
  • Anytime he sees food, he signs please. He likes to eat!
His one year appointment is on Tuesday so I will update with his stats! I have a good estimate of how much he weighs but getting a height measurement is hard so I am excited to see how much he has grown!

Happy Birthday Jacob!

(I wrote this post the other day and set it to post this morning but it never did and somehow disappeared)

Dear Jacob,

My sweet baby boy, I cannot believe you are a year old already! It has gone by so fast! You have grown and learned so much this year and I love watching you as you learn new things everyday. You are such a beautiful little boy. You made me a mother and have brought immeasureable happiness to me.

I love your adorable little smile, you smile with your whole face and it melts my heart everytime I see that. I love your expression when you figure out something new. It absolutely amazes me at all the things you can do now. I love your contagious laugh, anyone that hears that can't help but smile and laugh with you. I love the dance you do when daddy or I get home. It is such a great feeling to know how excited you get to see us. I love that you can fall down and not cry, but when you do cry you want me.

You are such a blessing to us and I thank God everyday for such a wonderful little boy. I can't wait to see what the next year has in store for us as you continue to learn and grow into a little boy.

I love you,
Mama

Breastfeeding

***Disclaimer: Everyone has their own beliefs and opinions on how their should feed their children, this is how I feel about feeding our child(ren).***

I love breastfeeding. I am beyond proud of my body for being able to feed Jake for a year (and exclusively for almost 6 months!). I have always planned on breastfeeding our children, but I never realized how passionate I would become about it until I had Jake. Actually before Jake was born I had planned on breastfeeding but pumping anytime we were going to be out and exclusively pumping once he got teeth. But once he was here that all went out the window and the plan was/is to let him nurse until he weans himself (for the most part).

Part of the change in plan was because of research that shows that babies that are breastfeed exclusively for 6 months tend to be healthier in the long run and the strong recommendations that babies be breastfed for at least a year and as long past that as desired by both baby and mother. And while this information is great, the biggest factor that played into the change was the awesome bond and time that I get with Jake. Fortunately, breastfeeding came pretty easy (I know that is not always the case) so within the first week it was pretty relaxing and gave me time to just cuddle with him. The one day that I spent in the hospital when he was 5 days old were so hard not only because I didn't get to be with Jake, but because I was upset that he was having to get formula. I am thankful that formula is an option because I could not feed Jake at the time but one of my biggest fears before becoming a mom was that I wouldn't be able to breastfeed and that I would have to give my baby something made in a factory instead of what they should naturally be eating. But those about 36 hours of him getting formula just made me reinforce my efforts to avoid formula for the remainder of his first year. So much so, that when, at the beginning of January, I was needed to work full time and realized that between the low pumping output and low freezer supply left I would not have enough to feed Jake breastmilk until his first birthday I seriously considered an offer from a friend to give me some of her extra milk in her freezer. Had it been longer than 3ish weeks that this was going to be an issue I would have done it. Fortunately, because it was only about 3 weeks Josh and I felt it would be fine to start Jake on whole milk and still avoid formula.

One part of breastfeeding that not only frightened me in the beginning, but that I was very self concious about as well, was nursing in public. I felt like I would be really exposed (even with a nursing cover) and that everyone would be looking at me. Sometime around 5 or 6 months I was really comfortable nursing Jake where ever we were as long as I used the cover and I tried to get to somewhere a little descrete. Right around 8 months Jake decided that he was no longer a fan of having his head covered and it became more difficult to feed him when we were out somewhere because he would keep moving the cover. Of course we couldn't just stay at home so eventually I got comfortable without the cover and more comfortable not trying to hide somewhere. And now it just seems so easy and natural do nurse him where ever without giving it another thought. Although I do still use the cover at times, if I forgot it one time, it wouldn't be a big deal. I love that nursing Jake has made me more comfortable and hopefully I will be comfortable nursing our next child(ren) as soon as they are born.

I know that we are at least getting closer to weaning and it makes me sad. I can't wait to have to opportunity breastfeed our next child (and any ones after that as well!).

Snow Days and Work

It has been a busy week around here! We seem to be having a lot more of those, partially precipitated by my increased work schedule. My co-worker is out with some family issues so last week I worked all week. This week I was off Monday-Wednesday for mom's surgery, but I went back today and will be working full time until further notice. Good for getting more hours for my license (and the money isn't bad either!) but it is much more difficult being away from Jake all week instead of just a couple days. I don't know that I could do this forever, but for the mean time this is what is necessary. We also had a few issues figuring out how we were going to do bottles for full weeks, but I will write another post about that later.

And to make this week more fun and exciting, we haven't had temperature out of the 30's! On Sunday we got about 4 inches of snow, which made for a lot of concern about the 4:15AM commute to Dallas mom and I had Monday morning. Fortunately the roads haven't been bad, but as of today we STILL have snow in our yard. I don't ever remember snow sticking around this long here! I think that move to Hawaii Josh and I always talk about might need to come sooner than later if this is going to be any sort of normal around here!

Happy New Year!

A little late on this.

We celebrated the New Year at home this year, with our beautiful baby boy. It was nice. Relaxed. We had a wonderful 2010 welcoming our baby boy and watching him grow. We celebrated our 3rd anniversary and took Jake on his first road trip to Michigan. We grew a lot as a family (not just in adding a new member), laughed a lot, played a lot, and slept not as much as we would have liked!

We welcome 2011 and are looking forward to our baby turning one and into a toddler and seeing him continue to learn and grow.

And since I said a couple of weeks ago now that I would share family pictures...here are a few!

11 Months

Wow. One month from today we will have a one year old. I absolutely cannot believe that! I am not sure how 11 months have gone by since our sweet little boy came into our world. And while I don't want him to grow up, I love watching him learn new things every day! I swear he learns something new everyday and it is crazy to watch! His birthday party invitations went out today which makes him turning 1 actually real! I am not ready yet.

New things for this month:
  • Waves hi and bye
  • Talking up a storm...says mama, dada, ball, hi, shoes, per (diaper), dog, done, and all sorts of other babbles
  • Occasionally signs more and please. We are still working on thank you
  • Dances when he hears music
  • Lip syncs to music (hilarious)
  • Gets how his toys work and know which ones make music
  • Pushes trucks around the living room
  • Walks with push toys
  • Drinks from a straw
  • Asks to nurse (usually by attacking me)

Jake's First Christmas

Whew! We had a super busy weekend with lots of presents and food! Grandpa and Grandma Rodriguez got here Christmas Eve day and we headed to Grams house before heading to church. This was the first year in a long time that we have not gone to Midnight Mass, but we didn't think Jake would make it through Midnight Mass. So we thought we would go to the children's mass. Well we didn't expect it to be so crowded so early, and when we got there it was already packed. Although there were quite a few rude people saving entire rows until 10 minutes before mass started. About 5 minutes before mass started someone came up to Josh and I and offered us a place to sit so we took it. Jake made a bunch of friends with the people around us.

We headed back to Grams house to do Christmas Eve with the Morrows. Jake got to open his stocking from Grams and lots of presents from Grams and the Morrows. After some trivia and desserts we headed back to our house to go to bed and wait for Santa! Christmas morning we got up and Jake opened his presents from us and Santa. It took him forever to open presents because he would get distracted with the toy and play with it for 10-15 minutes before wanting to move on! Eventually we got through all of them though. We had breakfast with all the grandparents then Jake opened the rest of his presents. He has so many things with wheels now...he is in heaven!

After Grandpa and Grandma Rodriguez left on Sunday we relaxed for a little bit before heading over to the Morrow's house for some more Christmas fun! We hung out there for a little while and came home to get some rest after our long weekend!

On Sunday Jake woke up congested and he has been coughing and had a runny nose since then. Poor baby is having a hard time sleeping. It sucks to not be able to do much to help him.

So before pictures...we got our family pictures and Jake's birthday pictures back last week! They turned out great! I will post some of the family pictures next time. We also got Jake's birthday invitation today (well the file for it, we have to have it printed). It is so freaking cute I can't wait to get it out!

Now here are a ton of pictures.
